Chapter Eighteen

‘This is their front?’ Sara said, shocked. They’d parked and were almost to the front entrance of the restaurant. An artistic waterfall fell over abstract sculptures of women and men in poses as though from a nineties Madonna music video in the area leading up to the restaurant. She’d never been here before, but she knew of it.

‘Yes,’ Agent Harding said, sighing. ‘It’s not traditional in the least. I think because the leader likes decent food. But let me do the talking. I can’t have you accidentally incriminating us. Like I said, there’s corruption in the ranks. You want us pulled off the Tommy Pope case, you’ll speak out of turn, and get us both in it.’

‘I’m sorry, I just can’t see this being a front. Laundromats. Car washes. Shoddy restaurants. But this? This looks like art.’

The restaurant was one of the premier spots in the area. Posh, lush, immaculate, expensive. Sara had always wanted to come here. Until recently, she’d had no one she wanted to take to such a place or be invited by to the kind of lofty location it appeared to be. The walls were white and sparsely decorated with minimalist art. Where there weren’t pieces of art, there were succulents in small vases on shelves. The entrance was adorned with a fountain that looked like a wall. A thin layer of water poured like a veil over the name of the restaurant, which glowed in neon green and was done in a Helvetica font—Water Works.

The fact that such a prime spot was connected to the mob disturbed her—she’d been expecting a grimy hole in the wall that no one would want to touch. That, or a family friendly location that specialized in some kind of ethnic fare.

‘This is really it?’ Sara repeated as they walked into the lobby. ‘Really?’ She didn’t care at this point if Harding was brusque and rude. Sara was now more interested in looking out for herself, since Harding had been so reluctant to use her very own tools to help the investigation. And now Sara considered them to be working parallel to each other—which was very different than what people did as a team.

Harding looked at Sara, almost glowering. ‘Remember. Let me do the talking.’

A male dressed in neutral skinny pants and a thin gray tie over a black shirt approached them and smiled politely. ‘Hi, welcome to Water Works. Unfortunately, we’re not quite open yet. We don’t serve lunch, but we do spend the afternoon preparing chef’s specialties for the day, so you can be sure it’s going to be amazing here later on. If you’d like to check back at five o’clock, dinner service begins at five thirty.’

The host—Sara assumed—fit right in, though he had a very annoying way of speaking. He was hipster, but not too hipster, elegant-seeming, with the proper snooty attitude. He wore black-framed glasses with a haircut and a beard that were as perfected as his surroundings.

Harding pulled out her badge and showed the host.
